Whimsical sweet gum pod / resin side tables
To complete our den renovation in 2018, I needed a pair of end tables and had decided on a simple design but it was too simple. I needed something to make them pop. I found it at Wine Country Pens. Casey Martin makes hybrid pen blanks with resin and grapevine. I saw a pen he made using sweet gum pods and resin and inspiration hit! Casey made the two slabs for me.They are interesting and a bit whimsical. Thanks Casey!
My daughter wanted a coffee table and wasn't having much luck finding one she liked so we collaborated on this piece. Made of stained Alder and Lacewood veneer. She loves to work puzzles so I made it big enough for a 1000 piece puzzle to fit in the drawer. She can pull the drawer out and set it on the table when she wants to work it. This keeps the puzzle easily stowed away. The drawer is flocked to keep the puzzle from shifting and features a sliding shelf that can be removed and stowed underneath the drawer. The shelves are diagonally opposed and rabbeted into the leg and both are supported by an aluminium rod . The top is a Lacewood veneer framed in Alder.
I enjoy shooting with my daughters and friends. My friend won a pair of limited edition Ruger Vaquero's . We thought they needed something better than the plastic case they came in. The inside is custom molded to fit the pistols and flocked. Made of Ambrosia Maple with concealed hinges and 3 digit case lock for safety.
We renovated our den last year and bought a flat screen TV. The old entertainment center, which I built, no longer fit so I needed something for the sound system. Made of figured maple and features through dovetails with a walnut inlay and walnut feet.
These are also a Yankee workshop design. I made a pair for a customer. They liked them so much they ordered 5 more. Well I decided to make a pair for us.. Then sold another pair. They appear to be popular. They are made of Cypress so naturally rot resistant. I used a tinted deck sealer to help protect them from the weather. If you want the classic grey patina look simply do nothing and let them weather.
A salute to Norm Abram. I guess you could say The New Yankee Workshop became my mentor early on. I bought the plans to his traditional style computer desk and modified it to be a corner style desk because I wanted a lot of desktop space. The cabinets are all Norm's design. I added the columed corners and feet. The cabinets are cherry and the top is cherry veneered ply and I veneered a border of Makore around the edge of the table top. BTW, the in/out box on the left was my first woodworking project back in the late 80's. It's cherry with curved finger joints.
My daughter took up the piano years ago and needed a music stand to go with her keyboard. I saw this unique stand in Fine Woodworking. It is made with walnut and the top swivels on both axis and height is also adjustable.
My brother in-law bought an antique English file cabinet that came out of a church in England. I was intrigued by the tambour door. I had never seen such a cabinet before and the problem was that there was no way to see how the door worked. So I came up with a design to where the tambour coils up in the bottom. The door is completely hand crafted and the drawers are joined with through and half blind dovetails. I built two one for my mother in-law and the other for me.
This was an early piece made of solid walnut. The design came from Woodworker's Journal. What I liked about it was that it is true to the authentic design, each shelf is a separate case with sliding glass door and raised panels.
This was my first furniture build about 20 years ago. I saw it in American Woodworker. It is a reproduction of a danish design. The table has a flip top so it doubles as a general use table. The top uses concealed hinges and the legs and aprons are hinged so they expand to hold the full top. Made of some beautifully figured cherry with walnut framing the center of the table. This was my first attempt at turning legs on a lathe as well.
